Academic Plan

Each year, the Arizona Board of Regents (ABOR) requires each university to submit an Academic Plan containing all proposed degree programs, anticipated organizational changes, and centers/institutes it intends to develop during the ensuing year. This is to announce the beginning of the Academic Plan process for 2010-2011.

Below is an outline of the steps and timetable to be followed in updating the ASU Academic Plan for 2010-2011. The templates are provided to the institutions by ABOR's Academic Affairs Committee. It is essential that the templates be completed in full and by the stated deadlines to allow for preparation of a master document for submission to ABOR. The previously approved ABOR 2009-2010 ASU Academic Plan (PDF) serves as a baseline for continuation; therefore, do not include items on last year's plan since these will be carried forward automatically.

Step 1: Provost announces the 2010-2011 Academic Plan cycle (October 1, 2009)

Step 2: College/School Templates Due (November 13, 2009).

Each college/school completes the appropriate Academic Plan templates for any new academic programs, anticipated organizational changes, and new centers/institutes it would like to propose for 2010-2011. In cases where schools are part of a larger school or college, the larger unit submits a single completed template for the entire college/school.

The college/school templates should be submitted by Nov. 13, 2009 to curriculumplanning@asu.edu by the dean or dean’s designee.

Template A. Academic Programs (Word)

    1. A list of proposed new undergraduate and graduate degree programs.
    2. A list of proposed changes to existing academic programs (e.g., rename, disestablishment of degree programs or merge).
    3. A list of proposed new certificates, concentrations and minors. (Note: Proposed new certificates, concentrations or minors, except where no major exists, do not go to ABOR for approval. These are handled internal to ASU.)

Template B. Academic Organizational Units (Word)

    1. A list of proposed new academic units (e.g., new departments/schools).
    2. A list of proposed changes to existing academic units (e.g., rename, disestablishment, move or merger of departments/schools).

Template C. Centers and Institutes (Word)

    1. A list of proposed new centers/institutes.
    2. A list of proposed changes to existing centers/institutes (e.g., rename, reorganization, or disestablishment).

Step 3: Internal review by University Provost’s Academic Council and the Provost; Preparation of the ASU Academic Plan (mid-November 2009-January 2010)
The college/school submissions will undergo review by the University Provost’s Academic Council which will make recommendations to the University Provost. Final approval of the college/school submissions will be made by the University Provost.

Step 4: ASU Academic Plan forwarded to ABOR (February 2010)
The ASU Academic Plan is submitted to the ABOR Academic Affairs Committee for review and recommendation to ABOR.

Step 5: ABOR review and approval of the ASU Academic Plan (April 2010)

Step 6: Provost’s Office notification to dean (following ABOR approval of ASU Academic Plan)
Following ABOR approval, the Provost’s Office will notify each dean regarding the status of items on their college/school Academic Plan. Inclusion on the approved ASU Academic Plan does not imply that a proposal is approved for internal implementation. For items included on the approved Academic Plan, implementation proposals will need to be prepared and undergo the appropriate internal unit, college/school and university reviews. Once all internal reviews and approvals have been completed, the Provost’s Office will notify the dean that the program, unit or center/institute may be implemented.

Step 7: Programs Requiring Fees
Degree proposals requesting new state resources, a program fee, or differential tuition must be reviewed and approved through the current budget and tuition/fee approval process. Questions about the fee process should be directed to Nancy Kiernan.

Questions about the Academic Plan process should be directed to Glenn Irvin or Julie Ramsden.
