Matthew Vail: A Journey of Resilience, Second Chances, and Academic Excellence

Matthew Vail’s story is one of resilience, transformation, and the power of second chances. As a transfer student from Estrella Mountain Community College (EMCC) to Arizona State University, Matthew is now pursuing dual degrees in Marketing (Digital and Integrated Marketing Communications) and Management through the W. P. Carey School of Business. His inspiring journey—from overcoming personal challenges to achieving academic excellence and giving back to his community—showcases the transformative impact of education and the MyPath2ASU transfer partnership between Maricopa Community Colleges and ASU.

A Dream Derailed, a Life Reclaimed

Growing up, Matthew dreamed of playing football at ASU. However, when his football career ended, he found himself grappling with a loss of identity and spiraling into depression. Years of struggling with addiction left him nearly homeless, until he made a life-changing decision: enough was enough.

“I journaled about going back to school and realized that if I wanted to stay sober and be successful, I had to take that step,” Matthew recalls. “EMCC gave me a second chance and set me on a path toward ASU and a brighter future.”

Finding Support and Success at EMCC

For Matthew, community college was the clear choice to begin rebuilding his life. “There was no question that community college was the way to go,” he says. “The advisors, financial aid team, and enrollment staff at EMCC were the first people to care about me in a long time. They took a chance on me, and I’ll always be grateful.”

With their support, Matthew flourished. He earned a 4.0 GPA in his first semester, joined the Honors Program, and became an active member of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), eventually rising to the role of PTK President. His academic achievements earned him the prestigious All-Arizona Academic Scholarship, paving the way for his transfer to ASU.

Achieving the Dream at ASU

ASU had always been Matthew’s dream, and he was determined to make the most of his second chance. “After years of struggling, I knew I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to attend ASU,” he says. “ASU’s reputation, top business school, and endless opportunities have helped me become the person I always knew I could be.”

Matthew’s experience at Barrett, The Honors College, has been particularly transformative. “The culture, small classes, and study abroad opportunities are unmatched,” he shares. “I highly recommend it—it’s worth the investment!”

Beyond the Classroom: Leadership and Giving Back

Matthew’s passion for storytelling and leadership has extended beyond academics. He currently serves as the Head of Marketing for a financial consulting firm, where he applies his skills in a professional setting.

But for Matthew, success is about more than personal achievement—it’s about giving back. He works with the Human Services Campus and Project Connect teams, helping individuals experiencing homelessness and addiction. “Knowing I was once in their shoes makes this work incredibly rewarding,” he says.

Advice for Future Transfer Students

Matthew’s journey offers valuable lessons for other students navigating the transfer process. “Take advantage of resources, network, and stay focused on your goals,” he advises. “Remember why you’re here: to get an education and change your life.”

Looking Ahead

After graduating from ASU, Matthew plans to pursue an MBA and work with a top consulting firm. His story is a testament to the power of resilience, the importance of second chances, and the transformative impact of education.
