Shaina Palacios: From Central Arizona College to ASU — Building a Legacy Through Education
This spring, we proudly celebrate Shaina Palacios, a MyPath2ASU® student graduating from Arizona State University with her Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies from the College of Integrative Sciences and Arts. Shaina’s journey is a story of family inspiration, community support, and perseverance — and MyPath2ASU helped make it possible.
For Shaina, higher education was always about more than personal achievement — it was about setting an example for her children and honoring the support of her husband.
"My journey toward higher education has been inspired by my wonderful family — my children and my husband. My kids are my biggest motivation. I want to show them that learning is important and exciting. I've heard that children with parents who have degrees are more likely to attend college and finish, and that drives me to pursue my education," she shared. "My husband is also attending ASU with me, which makes this journey even more special. We support each other through our studies."
Shaina’s path began at Central Arizona College, where community and friendship shaped her early academic experiences.
"I decided to attend community college because it felt like a natural step alongside my friends. In high school, everyone was talking about college, and I didn’t want to miss out on that experience," she said. "It’s not just about my education; it’s about honoring the commitment we made as friends to support each other along the way."
Her time at CAC was transformative.
"I always tell everyone, 'I never actually started learning until I went to college.' I’ve had some memorable professors who encouraged open discussions and challenged me to think critically. Their support helped me explore my beliefs and values in ways I hadn’t before."
Through her experiences in a work-study job at the campus library, Shaina found her calling.
"It was during my fifth semester at CAC, while working in the library, that everything clicked. I realized how much I enjoyed the environment and helping others find the resources they needed. That’s when I knew I wanted to become a librarian."
After transferring to ASU, Shaina found not only academic success but a sense of belonging.
"As a full-time employee in the Provost’s Office, serving as an Academic Transfer Evaluator, I’ve seen firsthand how ASU supports transfer students. It motivated me to push myself and finish my degree. At ASU, I’ve never felt more accomplished."
MyPath2ASU played a critical role in her transition and success.
"The MyPath2ASU program has been incredibly helpful for me as a visual learner. Seeing my milestones helped keep me motivated and focused on my goals. It truly sparked my desire to complete my education."
Beyond the classroom, Shaina stayed engaged by attending events such as the Commission on the Status of Women Zoom conferences, drawing inspiration and insight for her future career.
One of her favorite courses at ASU was IAS 300: Career Strategies and Personal Resilience, taught by Cathy Kerrey.
"She is the ideal professor if you want feedback on your work to grow as a professional," Shaina said.
Her advice for future transfer students is clear and empowering:
"Work closely with your advisor and advocate for your education. Research your career early and align it with the right degree. Ideally, starting this process in your junior year of high school will help you achieve maximum results."
After graduating this spring, Shaina plans to pursue a Master’s degree in Library Science at the University of Arizona, taking her passion for learning and helping others to the next level.
Congratulations, Shaina! Your hard work, dedication, and commitment to education are inspiring — and we can’t wait to see the amazing impact you will make in the world of libraries and beyond. 🌟
