Joana Cano Transfer Story

Transfer Student Spotlight: Joana Cano

From Central Arizona College ➡ Arizona State University

Joana CanoMeet Joana Cano, a first-generation college student who’s turning her lifelong passion for sports and storytelling into a career in sports journalism.

Joana transferred from Central Arizona College to Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, where she’s pursuing her Bachelor of Arts in Sports Journalism through the MyPath2ASU® transfer experience.

“My family inspired me to get my college degree,” Joana shared. “Being a first-generation college student meant that I had to excel. I don't mind that because of my family, I am studying something I like.”

Finding her voice in sports journalism

Joana has dreamed of working in sports journalism since the 7th grade. Her ambition is rooted in breaking barriers and creating representation for women in the field.

“There are not a lot of women in the sports journalism field, and I want to be that change,” she said.

At ASU, Joana is thriving both academically and professionally. She’s an active member of organizations such as the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, Women Leaders in Sports Media, and Blaze Sports, where she’s gaining real-world experience and networking with industry professionals.

Her ultimate goal? To become a sideline reporter or work with Telemundo Arizona, combining her love for sports, storytelling, and her bilingual background to connect with diverse audiences.

A message for future transfer students

Joana encourages other community college students who are considering ASU to take that next step with confidence:

“Don't be afraid to take that jump to ASU, it will be worth it!”
