Transfer Student Spotlight: Mia Ramirez — Spring 2024 ASU Graduate
For Mia Ramirez, transferring to Arizona State University was a natural next step in her academic journey — one inspired by the mentors who believed in her.
“I was inspired to pursue higher education by my mentors at Chandler Gilbert Ccommunity College — Dr. Nikki Nieset and Dr. Ryan Adams,” Mia shared. “They helped me every step of the way, from writing letters of recommendation to helping me find the right master’s program when I graduate! (ASU was the #1 choice!)”
To stay on track, Mia used MyPath2ASU®, a tool that helps community college students map their transfer path and maximize their credits. “It showed my progress and the classes I needed to take to help me make the most of my ASU experience.”
Finding Her Passion in Mental Health Advocacy

Originally planning to pursue a degree in music, Mia’s goals shifted during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“During the 2020 lockdown, I could see everyone’s mental health deteriorating — as well as my own. This is when I decided to pursue the CAPS major. Everyone has a right to mental health.”
Maximizing Her ASU Experience
While at ASU, Mia made the most of every opportunity:
- Completed an honors thesis on college student stress and Animal Assisted Therapy
- Interned at a high school, gaining hands-on experience alongside school counselors and social workers
- Built lifelong friendships within her CAPS cohort
- Worked an on-campus job: “Getting an on-campus job was one of the best things I did. Student workers rock!”

Advice for Future Transfer Students
“Step out of your comfort zone! It can be nerve-wracking, but just because we are transfer students does not make us any less of a Sun Devil.”
What’s Next?
Mia plans to continue her education by pursuing a Master of Counseling degree at ASU, with a continued focus on mental health advocacy and supporting student well-being.
