Types of Sync Classrooms

For faculty teaching in classrooms this fall semester, there are three types of classroom configurations outfitted with technology for teaching ASU Sync via Zoom. You can look up what kind of configuration your classrooms will have by searching the Zoom Capabilities document. 

The following technologies are available in classrooms.

Type A - Zoom Enhanced Classroom

Two full high-definition (1080p) cameras featuring full pan, tilt, and zoom controls from a touch screen. One camera focused on the instructor, one focused on the student seating area. One-touch camera control presets for the lectern and whiteboard areas.

Complete room audio coverage with multiple intelligent, steerable microphone arrays (some consisting of 100 microphones within a 2’ diameter housing) to capture instructors and students. Larger classrooms will be equipped with additional wireless lavalier microphones to enhance audio quality.

Digital whiteboarding - A 24” touch display and stylus will provide a digital, writable surface that can be shared into Zoom for remote participants and in-room students to view simultaneously.

Type A - Zoom Enhanced step-by-step directions for faculty

Type B - Zoom Equipped Classroom

One high-definition (1080p) camera featuring full pan, tilt, and zoom controls that is focused on the teaching area. One-touch camera preset to quickly refocus on the lectern. The camera can also be controlled by an assistant from in or outside the classroom.

Wireless instructor audio enabling the instructor to move throughout the classroom.

Type B - Zoom Equipped step-by-step directions for faculty

Type C - Zoom Mobile Classroom

Mobile kit that includes the necessary equipment to stream a course via Zoom. Currently designed in two configurations:

Small-Medium Sized Classrooms:

High definition camera mounted on a tripod within the classroom. Student operators can quickly pan/zoom the camera to focus on the instructor or whiteboards. Wireless instructor microphone for teaching anywhere in the space.

Small Classrooms and Laboratory/Studio spaces:

iPad with professional directional microphone. Used by a student operator as handheld or mounted on a tripod.

Type C - Zoom Mobile step-by-step directions for faculty 

Classroom In-person Group Orientation Sessions

Attendees visit specified locations at each campus location to learn first-hand about classroom capabilities. Specialists will answer questions, and provide a live demonstration.

Classroom Scheduled Technology Orientation Sessions

Technology Orientation sessions are offered for Faculty and TA’s on all campuses. Whether you need a refresher or a full technology orientation, the best time to schedule is two weeks before the semester starts. You can schedule a brief session with a specialist to learn how to operate the classroom technology. This Sync Checklist is a rapid way to make sure you're ready to teach a Sync class. Use this checklist to go through the steps to be ready for the new semester!
The Sync Classroom Technology document will guide you through the Sync classroom technology resources that are available to you. Review the resources to learn more about your Sync classroom.

Designing in Canvas?

This on-demand, self-directed course gives a basic introduction to Canvas, including how to build a course and how to use Canvas with your students.  

We have created a basic template for your Canvas course that will automatically add resources for your students and links to Sync teaching resources for you. It is available in the ASU Canvas Commons if you are already logged in to Canvas or by searching “ASU Sync Course Template.” Directions for how to add the Sync Course Template to your Canvas course.

Teaching Commons

This Canvas-based resource is a collection of teaching materials from across all the colleges and administrative units. It shares teaching and learning best practices and innovations so that faculty can benefit from work created across the university. Topics include teacher-student interactions, designing assessments and conducting class discussions.

How to teach in ASU Sync.

ASU leverages tools like Zoom, Slack and Canvas to bring everyone together. The goal is for the experience to shine and the technology to be seamless.


Host your classes in Zoom.

Access and launch Zoom directly from My ASU. Click on your personal Zoom meeting link and then enter your ASURITE UserID. For more information, view the Zoom guide for faculty and best practices for Zoom classroom management.

Launch discussions and collaborative work in Slack.

Slack is ASU’s collaboration hub that enables real-time communication and connection in a searchable platform for learning, messaging and content sharing. Every course at ASU can have its own dedicated Slack workspace in the ASU Community. Instructors can request course workspaces here. View the Slack 101 guide to get started.


Share learning materials and collect assessments in Canvas.

ASU's Canvas learning management system makes it easy to host recorded lectures and facilitate instruction remotely, including course announcements, assignments, discussions, quizzes and exams, and grading.
