About the Provost Teaching Award
The Provost Teaching Award recognizes teaching excellence and a commitment to fostering an educational environment in which all students succeed. Awardees will have demonstrated evidence of advancing student success through teaching activities, particularly in ways that advance the ASU Charter. The awardee’s teaching practices and strengths have a direct impact on student success. Teaching practices are broadly defined and include mentoring activities, program design, running of studios or laboratories, classroom teaching, and other relevant activities undertaken at ASU. Evidence of teaching accomplishments to be considered.
Each academic unit can support two applications per cycle, one from tenure-eligible faculty and one from career-track faculty.
Each unit should design its own process for deciding which applications to move forward to university-level consideration.
Recipients will receive $5,000 and will be celebrated at the university level.
Nomination Submission Information and Important Notes
- Each academic unit can support two applications per cycle, one from tenure-eligible faculty and one from career-track faculty. Important to note that former recipients of university-level teaching honors (such as President’s Professors) are not eligible for this award.
- Each unit should design its own process for deciding which applications to move forward to university-level consideration. Please share this information with your chairs and directors, as well as any plans for your internal process, so that news of the opportunity can reach faculty as well.
- Nominating units must register their official nominees by completing the initial online NOMINATION FORM for each nominee by May 27, 2026. The nominating Dean or the Dean’s designee (Vice Dean, Associate Dean, designated staff member) may complete the nomination form. See details below on information needed for Nomination Form.
The form can be accessed at: PROVOST TEACHING AWARD - The complete NOMINATION PACKET including formal letter of nomination and nominee materials will be due: Friday, August 14, 2026. This is to allow time for nominees to fully develop their materials.
Nominating units will work directly with the nominee on collating all requested material.
The complete nomination packet must be submitted to Office of the Provost by the Dean or the Dean’s designee (Vice Dean or Associate Dean) by emailing the submission to: [email protected]

Units will receive an email confirming receipt of submission.
- Nominations will be reviewed by a committee appointed by the Vice Provost for Academic Personnel. The committee will forward their recommendations to the Provost and President who will make the final decisions.
- Deans will receive a notification on the recipients identified.
It is recommended that units notify their designated nominee on the outcome of the award, even if their candidate is not a final recipient.
Nomination Materials Required
The following information is required for each nominee that is put forth by a unit:

- Nominator Designated Contact or Designee (Name, Title, Email): This contact will receive reminders about deadlines and will be the main contact for submitting the materials.
- Nominee information (Name, Title, Unit, Email)
- Short summary of nominee’s selection as the unit’s nominee, describing accomplishments as it aligns with the Provost Teaching Award. (max 200 words).
- Nominee Reference Information: Name, Title, Unit, and Email for two people who can speak to the candidate’s strengths as a teacher (these should not be students).
- If applicable, a listing any teaching awards the nominee may have already received. (see Provost Teaching Nomination Form)
Complete Nomination Packet Due Friday, August 14

Units will receive an email confirming receipt of submission.
- Letter of Nomination from Dean/Vice Dean or Unit Head detailing candidate’s excellence in teaching and impact on students. (up to 2 pages)
- Nominee Statement
Written by the nominee, this statement highlights the candidate’s teaching philosophy and teaching practices and how that aligns and furthers ASU’s Charter. Teaching will be broadly defined to also include mentoring activities, program design, running of studios or laboratories, classroom teaching, and other relevant activities undertaken at ASU.
Statement must include:- Candidate’s teaching philosophy, highlighting ways this aligns with ASU’s Charter
- Discussion of candidate’s teaching practices and how they may have evolved those practices to support ASU’s Charter. Candidate should discuss ways that their teaching practices are innovative. Statement may include descriptions of projects and/or assignments, together with the measures used to evaluate their effect on student success, which is especially important since this is an outcomes-based award
- Discussion of the educational outcomes and impact of the candidate’s teaching practices, which should include reference to student success.
Statement is single-spaced and up to four pages in length.
- Nominee CV: CV is abbreviated and can be up to two pages. CV should highlight nominee’s teaching accomplishments. CV should focus only work undertaken at ASU. If applicable, nominee should list any teaching awards the nominee may have already received.
