Through the ASU SolarSPELL Initiative, Laura Hosman exemplifies use-inspired research that serves the public good. Her work developing and deploying solar-powered digital libraries has expanded global access to education and information—dramatically increasing literacy and digital equity in underserved communities around the world. 

SolarSPELL is a model of how ASU’s commitment to being socially embedded and globally engaged can lead to real-world transformation. The initiative embodies principled innovation, uniting technology, sustainability, and social justice to create lasting, measurable impact. 

Hosman’s work powerfully advances ASU’s Charter in every dimension: she assumes responsibility for the success of communities, pursues research of public value, and uses the university’s knowledge and creativity to address the most pressing challenges of our time.
